Advice To Poets

Each year, Copper Canyon Press receives thousands of queries from poets—many of whom ask for guidance on how to get published; a select few ask “How can I become a better poet?” To the right are links to articles which help answer these questions:

In “Becoming a Poet: One Step at a Time,” John Haines shares some of his hard-earned wisdom, such as “read and reread” and “seek to understand the true nature of creative growth.” In her article “Advice to Young Poets: How to Make It out of the Slush Pile of Submissions,” editor Eleanor Hamilton provides the basic guidelines for poets submitting their work to literary magazines.

Other informative resources for poets seeking publication are The Poet’s Guide by Michael Bugeja (Story Line Press) and The Poet’s Market (Writer’s Digest Books).

We hope you find this information useful and we wish you good writing.
