About Braided Creek: A Conversation in Poetry

Poets Jim Harrison and Ted Kooser enjoyed a lively correspondence through pen-and-ink letters, and they frequently wrote short haiku-like poems to each other. (Jim Harrison’s mailbox is featured in the picture above.) After they exchanged several hundred poems, Harrison suggested that they compile a manuscript, to see what the poems created when they were gathered together.

Once the manuscript was complete, both poets promised each other to keep secret who wrote which poem!

In 2003, Braided Creek: A Conversation in Poetry was published and became one of Copper Canyon’s best selling titles. Reviewers loved the book, and pointed out that the slender volume was charming and profound, funny and wise, and the intimacy of “a conversation in poetry” was utterly compelling. Reviewers also made educated guesses on who wrote which poem, and Ted Kooser says they always guessed wrong.

Twenty years after its initial release, Copper Canyon Press is publishing an updated and expanded hardback  “Anniversary Edition” of Braided Creek that includes:

  • a foreword by Naomi Shihab Nye
  • an afterword by Ted Kooser
  • and most importantly, a dozen new poems by Ted Kooser.

As Ted Kooser writes in his afterword:

“My dear friend and correspondent would have delighted in seeing a handsome new edition like this. Inspired by the occasion, I’ve sent Jim a few new poems that are interspersed throughout. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we get a reply?”

To help support the publication of this anniversary edition, we invite you to make a contribution to Copper Canyon Press. All gifts will support the publication and distribution of this new edition and—best of all—you will help Braided Creek find a new generation of readers!
