SUMMARY:Kundiman Summer Session: Hybrid Poetry and Prose Experiments with Aimee Nezhukumatathil
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nTHE EDGE OF THE SEA IS A STRANGE & BEAUTIFUL PLACE:\nHYBRID POETRY & PROSE EXPERIMENTS\nWITH AIMEE NEZHUKUMATATHIL \nBuilding upon Rachel Carson’s famous maritime observations\, this class will investigate and interrogate the “strange and beautiful place” of genre-blurring work—work that melds elements of creative nonfiction and poetry. The primary focus of this hybrid class will be generative. There will be plenty of time for in-class craft analysis\, discussion\, and writing prompts galore that will send students home with several solid drafts of new work. This class is ideal for writers at any level of experience looking for a vibrant shake-up to their writing practices. \nThis class will meet over Zoom on Saturday\, August 1st\, from 2:00 PM–5:00 PM ET. This class is open to all writers who are BIPOC and scholarships are available. Check out the class page for more information on the class and how to register! \nRegister here: https://www.kundiman.org/hybrid-class

SUMMARY:Living Room Craft Talk with Ellen Bass V
DESCRIPTION:From Ellen Bass: \n“If you want to learn more about the strategies that you can employ to write poems that are more vivid\, arresting\, meaningful and complex\, please join Ellen Bass for this craft talk series on Fridays: July 10\, 17\, 24\, 31\, August 7 & 14 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET. \nEllen will be presenting practical teachings that you’ll be able to put to use at whatever stage of development you’re at—whether you’re just beginning or are an experienced and published poet. Though these talks are focused on poetry\, prose writers are welcome too. If you write memoir or fiction\, you will find that this precise attention to language will enrich your work as well. \nThis week’s topic will be Syntax: Natural and Not \nEach talk will be an hour to hour and a half long and will include a discussion of exemplary poems that illustrate these aspects of the craft\, as well as practical guidance for how you might bring these elements into your own poems. The talk will be followed by a half an hour for questions.” \nRegister here: https://www.ellenbass.com/events/living-room-craft-talks/

SUMMARY:Queer Futures: A Benefit Reading for The Majestic featuring Ocean Vuong
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n𝙌𝙐𝙀𝙀𝙍 𝙁𝙐𝙏𝙐𝙍𝙀𝙎: 𝘼 𝘽𝙀𝙉𝙀𝙁𝙄𝙏 𝙍𝙀𝘼𝘿𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙁𝙊𝙍 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙈𝘼𝙅𝙀𝙎𝙏𝙄𝘾 \nfeaturing the generously donated time and words of Ocean Vuong\, Alexander Chee\, Andrea Lawlor\, CAConrad\, Cameron Awkward-Rich\, Franny Choi\, Shira Erlichman  \n𝙒𝙃𝙀𝙉 & 𝙒𝙃𝙀𝙍𝙀 \nMonday\, August 7th at 7pm EST\nTHE INTERNET \n𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙈𝘼𝙅𝙀𝙎𝙏𝙄𝘾 \nThe Majestic is the only queer bar in Western Massachusetts. We were open for six months before the COVID-19 outbreak closed our doors and now we are facing the real possibility of that closure becoming permanent. It is our conviction that queer & trans bars and spaces are sexy\, important\, beautiful\, and necessary\, and in this rapidly evolving world we want to see spaces like ours continue to exist. Majestic was created by and for queer community and we are leaning of the resiliency of this community as we move forward. This benefit will help cover operating costs of the bar as we look for both immediate and long term paths into the future. We thank you for your support. \n𝙉𝙊𝙏𝙀𝙎 \nWhile this is a benefit for The Majestic\, it is also a gathering of community around queer art and a belief in queer futures. As such\, it is not our wish to turn anyone away if cost is prohibitive. If this is the case\, send an email to majesticnoho@gmail.com with the subject line “Reading Access” and we will send you the information needed to access the event with no questions asked. \nTo minimize any interruptions during the reading\, we will have several moderators moving through the pages of the call and prepared to remove anybody who attempts to disrupt the event. \nRegister here: https://www.majesticsaloon.com/reading/tickets

SUMMARY:Decatur Book Festival presents Jericho Brown
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \nThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution Decatur Book Festival presented by Emory University is proud to feature 2020 Pulitzer Prize winner Jericho Brown as this year’s Keynote speaker. In conversation with festival board president\, Mathwon Howard\, Brown will discuss his most recent book\, The Tradition\, that details the normalization of evil and its history at the intersection of the past and the personal. As in much of his poetry\, Brown highlights both the broad and intimate\, and at their very core a distillation of the incredibly human. Brown makes mythical pastorals to question the terrors to which we’ve become accustomed\, and to celebrate how we survive. Join us for a reading and discussion with one of the greatest poets of our time\, and an integral member of the Emory community.  \nRegister here: https://decaturbookfestival.com/session/keynote-jericho-brown/ \nJoin here: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/ajc-dbf-2020-keynote-jericho-brown

SUMMARY:Elliott Bay Book Company presents Aimee Nezhukumatathil and John Freeman
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n“If things go as we imagine this might\, this evening’s program will feature Aimee Nezhukumatathil\, one of the most vital poets of her generation\, doing this virtual reading program with her first book of prose\, the dazzling\, animated book that is World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies\, Whale Sharks\, and Other Astonishments (Milkweed).  She\, presumably at home in Mississippi\, will be joined by John Freeman\, whom we think will be linked in from London. Most known for extraordinary work as an editor and essayist\, he is also becoming increasingly recognized as a poet of note. Copper Canyon Press\, which now also publishes Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s poetry (Oceanic)\, has just published John Freeman’s second collection\, The Park\, following his earlier Maps. This program should feature strong talk about the planet\, and some excellent poetry.” \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/aimee-nezukhumatathil-and-john-freeman-tickets-118411049637
