SUMMARY:92Y presents Young Writers Workshop: Poetry with Monica Sok
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n“Online Class for high school students\, ages 15-18 \nOur poems have the power to reflect us. We may look into the mirror to see ourselves in plain sight. But what about windows that invite our own reflections inside another space?\n\nThe self\, looking into a room. The self\, staring outside at a whole landscape. The self\, catching its reflection inside a car window while turning around the corner. Depending on where you stand\, poetry invites the hidden self. In this class we will read and write poems that go inward. We will address ourselves and focus on the unknowns that may be buried inside of us. \nClass meets Sundays: November 8 and 15.” \nRegister here: https://www.92y.org/class/young-writers-workshop-monica-sok

SUMMARY:The Black Matter Is Life: Poetry for Engagement and Overcoming - Love\, Love\, Love\, feat. Jericho Brown
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n“Join us this winter for a virtual series of public conversations entitled\, The Black Matter is Life: Poetry for Engagement and Overcoming. In this series\, we will explore and discuss the rich tradition and innovation found in African American poetry. \n\nPoetry is a powerful art form\, one that offers profound insights into what it means to be human. Through the creative\, succinct\, and melodious use of language\, poets render into words their joys\, their challenges\, their vulnerabilities\, and their discoveries\, thus providing shape and meaning to the human connection and shared emotional experience. \nIn the wake of our nation’s current unrest\, this program is designed to build bridges across the racial divide by introducing the audience to the writings of a number of African American poets whose work has shone a light on a rich cultural heritage that has often gone unexplored. This program asks the audience to consider how African American poetry provides tools for healing our nation’s deep racial wounds. \n\nTo begin this exploration of the vast diversity within African American poetic tradition\, UNH professors Reginald Wilburn and Dennis Britton will facilitate three online conversations. Each discussion deconstructs four poems grouped by themes. Conversations will center these poems within the context of the African American literary tradition\, their cultural heritage\, the traditions they encompassed\, and the relevance this tradition has to us today. The series will also explore the question\, ‘Why does African American Poetry matter?'” \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUqdu-vqz8oG9MzJH1DYmxo_GMc5qQrRn7c

SUMMARY:Home Poetry Workshop Series: The Magic and Uncertainty of Memory with Rachel McKibbens
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n“HOME is a poetry reading\, open mic\, and workshop series led by Boston Poet Laureate Porsha Olayiwola. It consists of a featured reader and brief open mic every first Friday of the month\, followed by a writing workshop the following Saturday morning.”  \nThis workshop is led by Rachel McKibbens. \n“The magic and uncertainty of memory often gives way to the fantastic\, allowing our stories to inherit the dreamlike qualities of the subconscious. In this discussion\, we will explore how fragments and masks (in both language and persona) allow us to push art beyond the boundaries of truth\, permitting the core depths of ourselves to be revealed in their darkest\, most feral forms. By examining the work of contemporary poets and visual artists\, we will learn the importance of allowing the many versions of truth to push back against oppressive realities.” \nRegister here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfZuKPSS5Whb95wyA0yX_O3yVNWG15uMQwngGRJeUS0jSagWw/viewform

SUMMARY:Unbound Book Festival presents Poetry and Prayer\, feat. Jericho Brown
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n“Featuring Jericho Brown\, Molly McCullly Brown\, Alicia Jo Rabins\, with moderator Rev. Molly Housh Gordon \nIf\, as Mary Oliver declared\, attention is the beginning of devotion\, then many poems are akin to prayer. But for those poets steeped in liturgical traditions or marked by celestial yearnings\, that connection is more direct. The poets on this panel will discuss poetry’s relationship to prayer\, as well as to other religious vocalizing\, such as chants\, hymns\, koans\, and mantras. Moreover\, they will consider poetry as a religion itself\, an unorthodox source of holiness and redemption.” \nAccess link forthcoming here: http://www.unboundbookfestival.com/poetry-and-prayer
