SUMMARY:Seren Cardiff Poetry Festival presents Tishani Doshi
DESCRIPTION:Seren Cardiff Poetry Festival presents\, April 15 – 18 GMT \, Tishani Doshi \nFrom the organizers: \nIt feels like a lifetime since we hosted our 2020 festival in the Temple of Peace last February. At the time\, as Storm Denis raged outside\, none of us knew what we would face in the coming months. Now we are looking ahead to the Seren Cardiff Poetry Festival 2021 which we are delighted to announce will take place online from Thursday 15 – Sunday 18 April 2021. \nThe festival team are currently working on another fantastic programme showcasing both new and established voices and featuring some of the world’s best poets and artists. \nLike many festivals\, we have had to adapt to a new virtual world. Our 2021 programme will be entirely digital and to make it accessible for everyone\, all of our main events (excluding workshops) will be free. \nFestival Director Amy Wack says she is “Really looking forward to this poetry-packed celebration in April 2021!” We hope you are too! \nAccess link will appear here: https://cardiffpoetryfestival.com/2021/01/18/seren-cardiff-poetry-festival-returns-april-2021/

SUMMARY:Left Bank Books presents Alice Quinn & Contributors - Together in a Sudden Strangeness feat. Traci Brimhall & Dana Levin
DESCRIPTION:Left Bank Books presents Alice Quinn & Contributors – Together in a Sudden Strangeness\, April 19 at 7 PM CDT\, feat. Traci Brimhall & Dana Levin \nFrom the organizers: \nIn this urgent outpouring of American voices\, our poets speak to us as they shelter in place\, addressing our collective fear\, grief\, and hope from eloquent and diverse individual perspectives. \n**Featuring 107 poets\, from A to Z—Julia Alvarez to Matthew Zapruder—with work in between by Jericho Brown\, Billy Collins\, Fanny Howe\, Ada Limón\, Sharon Olds\, Tommy Orange\, Claudia Rankine\, Vijay Seshadri\, and Jeffrey Yang** \nAs the novel coronavirus and its devastating effects began to spread in the United States and around the world\, Alice Quinn reached out to poets across the country to see if\, and what\, they were writing under quarantine. Moved and galvanized by the response\, the onetime New Yorker poetry editor and recent former director of the Poetry Society of America began collecting the poems arriving in her inbox\, assembling this various\, intimate\, and intricate portrait of our suddenly altered reality. \nIn these pages\, we find poets grieving for relatives they are separated from or recovering from illness themselves\, attending to suddenly complicated household tasks or turning to literature for strength\, considering the bravery of medical workers or working their own shifts at the hospital\, and\, as the Black Lives Matter movement has swept the globe\, reflecting on the inequities in our society that amplify sorrow and demand our engagement. \nFrom fierce and resilient to wistful\, darkly humorous\, and emblematically reverent about the earth and the vulnerability of human beings in frightening times\, the poems in this collection find the words to describe what can feel unspeakably difficult and strange\, providing wisdom\, companionship\, and depths of feeling that enliven our spirits. \n  \nWatch here: https://www.facebook.com/LeftBankBooks.STL/live

SUMMARY:Pangyrus presents What Tells You Ripeness: Black Poets on Nature with Nikki Wallschlaeger
DESCRIPTION:Pangyrus presents What Tells You Ripeness: Black Poets on Nature with Nikki Wallschlaeger \nFrom the organizers: \nPangyrus is proud to present a collection of Black writing on nature\, What Tells You Ripeness. Soliciting and selecting poets for the collection\, guest poetry editor Nikki Wallschlaeger aims to continue the work of Camille T. Dungy’s anthology Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry\, published in 2009. In Nikki’s words\, “I think it’s important to highlight\, during this time\, that white supremacy and trauma are not the only topics Black writers are capable of writing about. The natural world itself is not racist. Isn’t that great? We can at least have that—as a space of connection\, abundance\, and complexity.” \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/what-tells-you-ripeness-black-poets-on-nature-launch-and-reading-tickets-147199954025

SUMMARY:Literati Bookstore presents At Home with Literati: Susan Briante\, Phil Metres\, & Tess Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Literati Bookstore presents At Home with Literati: Susan Briante\, Phil Metres\, & Tess Taylor \nFrom the organizers: \nIn 1936\, noting a turn toward the documentary in a variety of arts\, Wallace Stevens explained the Depression had focused attention “in the direction of reality\, that is to say\, in the direction of fact.” At a time of unprecedented environmental\, political\, and economic crisis we may be experiencing another such turn.  But what does this mean for poetry\, and what are the limits and pitfalls of the documentary project? What roads does it open up?  Poets Susan Briante\, Philip Metres\, and  Tess Taylor will discuss and share some work from their recent books: Briante’s Defacing the Monument\, lyric essays on immigration\, archives\, aesthetics and the state\, Metres’ Shrapnel Maps\, a docupoetic investigation into the wounds and reverberations of the Israel/Palestine conflict\, and Taylor’s Last West: Roadsongs for Dorothea Lange a poet’s retracing of the steps of the documentary photographer. \nLink to watch the event here: https://www.literatibookstore.com/event/home-literati-susan-briante-phil-metres-tess-taylor
