SUMMARY:The Elliott Bay Book Company presents a Reading with Tishani Doshi and Kelli Russell Agodon
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n \n“Award-winning poet\, writer\, and dancer Tishani Doshi and award-winning poet and editor Kelli Russell Agodon visit the store to discuss their poetry collections\, A God at the Door and Dialogues with the Rising Tides. \nPlease help us prepare for audience size by RSVPing here.” \nA God at the Door \n“We are homesick everywhere\,” writes Tishani Doshi\, “even when we’re home.” With aching empathy\, righteous anger\, and rebellious humor\, A God at the Door calls on the extraordinary minutiae of nature and humanity to redefine belonging and unveil injustice. In an era of pandemic lockdown and brutal politics\, these poems make vital space for what must come next-the return of wonder and free movement\, and a profound sense of connection to what matters most. From a microscopic cell to flightless birds\, to a sumo wrestler and the tree of life\, Doshi interrupts the news cycle to pause in grief or delight\, to restore power to language. A God at the Door invites the reader on a pilgrimage-one that leads us back to the sacred temple of ourselves. This is an exquisite\, generous collection from a poet at the peak of her powers. \nDialogues with Rising Tides \nIn Kelli Russell Agodon’s fourth collection\, each poem facilitates a humane and honest conversation with the forces that threaten to take us under. The anxieties and heartbreaks of life—including environmental collapse\, cruel politics\, and the persistent specter of suicide—are met with emotional vulnerability and darkly sparkling humor. Dialogues with Rising Tides does not answer\, This or that? It passionately exclaims\, And also! Even in the midst of great difficulty\, radiant wonders are illuminated at every turn. \nTishani Doshi is an award-winning poet\, writer\, and dancer. She has published six books of poetry and fiction. Her work has appeared in newspapers and journals such as the Guardian\, the National\, and the Hindu\, and her essays\, poems and short stories have been widely anthologized. Doshi lives in Tamil Nadu\, India\, and is currently Visiting Professor of Practice\, Literature and Creative Writing at New York University\, Abu Dhabi. \nKelli Russell Agodon (she/her) is a bi/queer poet and editor whose newest poetry book is Dialogues with Rising Tides (Copper Canyon Press) was named a Finalist in the Washington State Book Awards and shortlisted for the Eric Hoffer Book Award Grand Prize in Poetry. She is also the author of Demystifying the Manuscript: Essays & Interviews on Creating a Book of Poems. She is the cofounder of Two Sylvias Press where she works as an editor and book cover designer. She teaches at Pacific Lutheran University’s low-res MFA program\, the Rainier Writing Workshop. Kelli is currently part of a project between local land trusts and artists to help raise awareness for the preservation of land\, ecosystems\, and biodiversity called Writing the Land. She also co-hosts the poetry series”Poems You Need” with Melissa Studdard. Her latest collection\, Accidental Devotions\, is forthcoming from Copper Canyon Press in 2026.

SUMMARY:The Vacancies We Name: Poetry of Global Perspectives with Michael Wiegers\, Tishani Doshi\, Pádraig Ó Tuama\, and Shangyang Fang
DESCRIPTION:From the Organizers: \nWhen we leave home and move through the world\, what vacancies get created inside us? What does it mean to be severed from belonging—and to find it again? And how does poetry give us a mouth with which to tune our empty spaces? In this reading\, three celebrated\, international poets explore the intersections between distance\, home\, and spirit\, offering a window into the energies we use to make a place in which we can live\, whether here\, there\, or both at once.

SUMMARY:Live! at the Library: Bobbitt Prize Event with Arthur Sze
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nThe Library of Congress will award the 2024 Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry to National Book Award winner Arthur Sze for lifetime achievement in poetry. \nSze of Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, will receive the prize on Thursday\, Dec. 5\, at 6:30 p.m. during an event in the Mumford Room of the Library’s Madison Building. The event is free\, and registration is open to the public. Sze will also give a short talk on poetry\, followed by a moderated discussion with Rob Casper\, the Library’s head of poetry and literature. \nSze’s presentation is titled “Lines of Sight\, and Beyond.” In it he will braid some of his poems with details about his evolution as a poet\, insights about his creative process and ideas of exploration and freedom in context of the American experience. \nThe 2024 Bobbitt Prize was awarded for lifetime achievement in poetry by the Librarian of Congress\, based on the recommendation of an internal committee. \n“In 11 books and over more than 50 years\, Arthur Sze has developed a signature lyricism of seeing. His poems focus on images and declarations – but they also move through breathtaking juxtapositions\, create layers of fragments that open up rather than direct their readers. Sze’s imaginative capaciousness pulls in languages\, traditions and systems from both East and West\, and it can speak to the cosmos then turn to the smallest natural detail\,” the committee wrote in its citation for Sze. “His latest collection\, ‘The Glass Constellation: New and Collected Poems\,’ captures the range and the commitment of his life’s work\, to create ‘points of connection\, reflection\, and refraction . . . part of an organic growing whole.’” \nTo register for this event\, visit: https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/91097920/liveat-the-librarybobbitt-prize-event-with-arthur-sze-washington-events-from-the-library-of-congress__;!!EDx7F7x-0XSOB8YS_BQ!aWy5GpKF81XIsiehWaNwtQ7u6svwojAx4zn6-HplrjVbYAB8AeYirk2HB6Bt4V9sb7wDkif6p5K_AV0zgcQ19zw$ \nTo read the full article\, visit: https://newsroom.loc.gov/news/library-of-congress-awards-bobbitt-poetry-prize-to-arthur-sze/s/a34cdce4-d123-4524-8447-528d9506fd93

SUMMARY:Reimagine Virtual Candlelight Vigil with Danusha Laméris and Naomi Shihab Nye
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nLet’s honor our loved ones\, hold space for grief\, and reflect on the possibilities of transformation with poets Danusha Laméris and Naomi Shihab Nye. \nReimagine has been hosting candlelight vigils since March 2020\, the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\, in order to break down taboos and hold space for all that we’ve lost. This gathering features Danusha Laméris and Naomi Shihab Nye\, two celebrated poets with new books to share and discuss. Our other featured guest is Marne Lucas: end-of-life doula\, artist\, and Reimagine community collaborator. \nDanusha Laméris is a poet and essayist. Her first book\, The Moons of August (2014)\, was chosen by Naomi Shihab Nye as the winner of the Autumn House Press poetry prize and was a finalist for the Milt Kessler Book Award. Some of her work has been published in: The Best American Poetry\, POETRY Magazine\, The New York Times Magazine\, The American Poetry Review\, The Gettysburg Review\, Ploughshares\, The Kenyon Review\, and Orion. She was the 2020 recipient of the Lucille Clifton Legacy Award and her second book\, Bonfire Opera (University of Pittsburgh Press\, Pitt Poetry Series)\, was a finalist for the Paterson Award\, and the winner of the 2021 Northern California Book Award in Poetry. As the 2018-2020 Poet Laureate of Santa Cruz County\, California\, Laméris co-founded The Hive Poetry Collective; a radio show\, podcast\, and event hub. She is on the faculty of Pacific University’s Low-Residency MFA program and teaches The Path of Poetry workshops online. Her third book is Blade by Blade (Copper Canyon Press\, September 2024). \nPalestinian-American writer\, editor and educator Naomi Shihab Nye grew up in St. Louis\, Jerusalem\, and San Antonio\, Texas\, where she graduated from Trinity University and continues to live.  She has been Young People’s Poet Laureate for the U.S. (Poetry Foundation)\, poetry editor for the New York Times magazine\, and The Texas Observer\, and a visiting writer in hundreds of schools and communities all over the world. Her books include Everything Comes Next\, The Tiny Journalist\, Voices in the Air\, Sitti’s Secrets\, Habibi\, This Same Sky\, and The Tree is Older than You Are: Poems & Paintings from Mexico. Her volume 19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East\, was a finalist for the National Book Award. The Turtle of Oman and The Turtle of Michigan have both been part of the Little Read program\, North Carolina. She has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from The Texas Institute of Letters\, the Arab American National Museum\, and the National Book Critics Circle. Her newest book is Grace Notes: Poems about Families (Harper Collins\, May 2024) \nMarne Lucas (she/her/they) is a queer\, multidisciplinary artist\, end of life doula (EOLD)\, and Reimagine community collaborator working at the intersection of art\, science\, and health\, using conceptual overlaps: life’s energy\, the body\, mortality\, and in social practice investigations. Lucas’ long-term projects are informed by events and emotions of the community around her\, and are inspired by the doula and palliative care movements. An infrared thermal video pioneer\, Lucas uses heat-sensitive imaging technology to illuminate the magic and fragility of human life cycles. The Bardo Project explores creativity as a form of spiritual and somatic care in collaborations with terminally ill artists nationwide to establish their legacy. Lucas received EOLD training at INELDA under Henry Fersko Weiss\, a role that supports the dying and their families. Marne has collaborated with artists\, choreographers\, dancers\, musicians\, activist groups\, sex workers\, health care and LGBTQIA non-profits\, and the public at large. Lucas received Regional Arts & Culture Council project grants (2024\, 2013\, 2008)\, UMEZ Creative Engagement grants (2018\, 2021) administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council\, and an Oregon Arts Commission public art commission (2009). Lucas was formerly a harm-reduction activist for Danzine\, and advisory board member to OUTsider\, an LGBTQIA multi-arts festival (Austin\, TX.)  \nAbout Reimagine: Reimagine is a nonprofit organization catalyzing a uniquely powerful community–people of different backgrounds\, ages\, races\, and faiths (and no faith) coming together in the hopes of healing ourselves and the world. We specifically support each other in facing adversity\, loss\, and mortality and – at our own pace – actively channeling life’s biggest challenges into meaningful action and growth. \nFor more information and to RSVP\, visit: https://letsreimagine.org/76768/reimagine-virtual-candlelight-vigil-with-danusha-lameris-and-naomi-shihab-nye

SUMMARY:New Works: Sophie Cabot Black and Marie Howe
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nExperience the newest poetry collections from Sophie Cabot Black and Marie Howe through poems that capture visions of the pastoral and glimpses of the quotidian. In Cabot Black’s Geometry of the Restless Herd (Copper Canyon\, 2024)\, poems about sheep herding examine the connection between people\, land\, animals\, and power. Howe’s New and Selected Poems (W.W. Norton\, 2024)\, collates poems from her four previous collections\, creating a sweeping and intimate portrait of her body of work. The evening’s readings and conversation between the artists will reveal two extraordinary takes on the human and the spiritual. \nReadings in Kray Hall with a reception to follow in the Viscusi Reading Room. \nFor more information\, visit: https://poetshouse.org/event/new-works-black-and-howe/

SUMMARY:Ted Kooser Book Release - Raft
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n“Delightfully universal\, Raft by Pulitzer Prize-winner Ted Kooser travels the Midwest landscape\, attuned to life’s shared experiences and emotions–illness\, aging\, beauty\, and love. \nRaft is our fourth collection of poetry from Pulitzer Prize-winner and former U.S. Poet Laureate\, Ted Kooser. Open in his desire to write for the everyday reader\, these poems maintain the open-handed and accessible style that thousands have come to love. Yet\, deeply imagistic and metaphorically rich\, Raft shows us that even the simplest of objects\, the simplest of actions\, can become a portal.” \nView here: https://sewardchapters.com/event/2024-09-09/ted-kooser-release-raft

SUMMARY:Ellen Bass presents Truth and Beauty with Marie Howe and Ellen Bass
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Bass presents Truth and Beauty with Marie Howe and Ellen Bass \nFrom the organizers: \n“If you want to encounter more truth in your poems\, to express it in the most beautiful way possible\, to craft poems that reflect the inextricable marriage of truth and beauty\, love and death\, the luminous and the ordinary\, please join us for this special workshop. \nWe will elude and distract the censors that silence or limit us. We’ll approach our experience from new angles to find the poem within the story. We’ll question the stories we think are true and experience the power of not-knowing and discovery. \nWe will write poems\, share our writing\, and hear what our work touches in others. We’ll also read model poems by contemporary poets and discuss aspects of the craft. But mainly this will be a writing retreat—time to explore and create in a supportive community. Though the focus is on poetry\, prose writers who want to enrich their language will find it a fertile environment.” \nRegister here: https://www.ellenbass.com/events/truth-and-beauty-online-july-august-2024/

SUMMARY:The Community of Writers: Rediscovering Sylvia Plath with Victoria Chang & Matthew Zapruder
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \n“When we think of Sylvia Plath\, it’s easy to see the image of the electric confessional poet who took her own life. Her tragic personal history\, including her marriage to Ted Hughes\, can easily obscure her poetry. But when we return to the work itself\, we see a poet of genius\, who mapped her struggles to find a completely original poetic voice. \n“In this Short Course\, we’ll close-read Plath’s poetry\, to learn from her singularity. We’ll begin with an overview of Plath’s poetry leading up to her creative breakthrough\, then focus the remaining four sessions on close reading poems from her posthumous\, best-known book Ariel. We’ll try to understand together where she came from\, her essential innovations\, and her effect on the poetry that came after her. Was she truly a “confessional” poet? How does she make meaning from the turmoil of her life\, and the time in which she wrote? What were her poetic innovations? How can we understand her poems as something more than mere autobiography? What aspects of her poetry continue to influence poems today? In addition to the poems from Ariel and after\, we’ll look at drafts of her poems from her archives\, to explore her writing process\, so that we can learn from her creative process.  \n“Each session will begin with an hour of discussion between Victoria Chang and Matthew Zapruder\, including background and close readings\, followed by a short break. We will then reconvene for our second hour in which we will discuss your thoughts from the chat\, answer questions\, and offer further insights. We will end each session with an optional poetry writing prompt based on Plath’s poetry. \n“Dates & Times: Online Sundays from April 28 to May 19\, 2024 with a Bonus Session on May 22. Main sessions run from 4 pm-6 pm (Pacific) with optional discussion groups to follow. \n\nSunday\, April 28\, 2024  4:00-6:00 PT / 7:00-9:00 ET\nSunday\, May 5\, 2024  4:00-6:00 PT / 7:00-9:00 ET\nSunday\, May 12\, 2024 4:00-6:00 PT / 7:00-9:00 ET\nSunday\, May 19\, 2024 4:00-6:00 PT / 7:00-9:00 ET\nWednesday\, May 22\, 2024 4:00-6:00 PT / 7:00-9:00 ET (Bonus Session)\n\n“Note: For those who are interested\, intimate Zoom discussion groups (Virtual Houses) will meet after each session and on subsequent Saturdays at 10 AM.” \nRegister here: https://communityofwriters.org/register-for-rediscovering-sylvia-path/
