DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nTransylvania University Theater\, in partnership with Maurice Manning\, an esteemed American poet\, Guggenheim Fellow\, Pulitzer Prize finalist and professor of English\, presents a performance adaptation of his latest book of poetry\, “Railsplitter.” \nThrough this filmed\, online performance\, the Theater program asks the question: How does the mythology of Lincoln speak currently through us\, expressed by Manning’s words? \nRailsplitter is a collection of 31 short interpretations of Manning’s poems — ranging from straight recitations of the lines to music videos. A choose-your-own adventure style of online theater performance\, the production crew boasts of more than 10 directors\, working with over 40 performers\, including students\, faculty\, staff and alumni\, put together by eight student video editors. \nTune into this page or Transylvania’s YouTube channel on Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. for the premiere of the video performance. If you miss the premiere\, the video will be available for viewing through the end of January 2021.

DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nEdmonds Center for the Arts (ECA) presents the first-ever WE SPEAK Festival\, a virtual\, evening-length celebration of spoken word poetry and storytelling. Integrating critically-acclaimed artists Jericho Brown\, Andrea Gibson\, Kealoha\, Shane Koyczan\, and Robin Sanders\, alongside talented local youth chosen through a juried selection process\, WE SPEAK seeks to embody the complex themes and concerns of the year 2020. Through performance\, artists are invited to respond to issues including (but not limited to) the global health crisis\, Black Lives Matter and the racial justice movement\, and experiences of disability\, Indigenous\, and LGBTQ+ communities. Their voices call for action\, dignity\, and\, ultimately hope. \n  \nThis fall\, as part of ECA’s Education & Outreach programming\, Kealoha is leading virtual spoken word workshops with young people through partnerships with Leadership Launch and Scriber Lake High School. Three student finalists from the WE SPEAK Youth Poetry Slam Competition will receive virtual mentorship sessions with Kealoha\, as well as the opportunity to perform their work live from the ECA stage on Dec. 3. \n  \nWarning: Student and professional artist submissions to the WE SPEAK Festival may contain adult or explicit language. \n  \nTicket Holders will receive a Livestream link via email 24 hours prior to the event. \nPay What You Can $5-$45

DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nJoin us on Friday night to kick off THE CITY’s MISSING THEM Memorial Event with poetry readings on loss\, grieving and celebrating life during a pandemic\, presented by Brooklyn Public Library featuring poets Ellen Bass\, Ross Gay and Aracelis Girmay. \nTHE CITY’s MISSING THEM project is an ambitious effort to track down every New Yorker that died due to COVID-19 and write a story about them. What started in May as a digital memorial has now transformed into a two and a half day virtual event to honor and celebrate those we’ve lost. The event will include performances\, writing workshops and\, most importantly\, stories and memories shared by the families who have written into the MISSING THEM memorial. \nThe night will also include a short video of community members from across New York City reciting a poem they wrote based on the 200+ obituaries written by THE CITY’s MISSING THEM writers and reporters. This is presented by Brooklyn Public Library’s Poetry of Comfort class. \nWhen you sign up for any of the MISSING THEM Memorial events\, you’ll be asked if you would like to share a story or listen to stories shared by family members. DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \nEvery writer has their strengths\, but we often tend to over-rely on what we already know we do well. In this workshop with Traci Brimhall\, we will focus on how to create a balance of tension in poems. We will look at poems that model a balance of tension between clarity and wilderness\, narrative and music\, emotion and intellect. We will then use exercises to generate new work that tries to balance our inherent strengths by employing vocabulary\, syntax\, and tonal choices we normally shy away from. We will also workshop some new poems. If you have a natural gift for image and metaphor\, what happens when you incorporate philosophy or meditation? If you tend to write simple\, declarative sentences\, how would your work change if you wrote a poem in a single\, long\, winding sentence and focused on the musicality of language rather than clarity? DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n“Join us this winter for a virtual series of public conversations entitled\, The Black Matter is Life: Poetry for Engagement and Overcoming. In this series\, we will explore and discuss the rich tradition and innovation found in African American poetry. \n\nPoetry is a powerful art form\, one that offers profound insights into what it means to be human. Through the creative\, succinct\, and melodious use of language\, poets render into words their joys\, their challenges\, their vulnerabilities\, and their discoveries\, thus providing shape and meaning to the human connection and shared emotional experience. \nIn the wake of our nation’s current unrest\, this program is designed to build bridges across the racial divide by introducing the audience to the writings of a number of African American poets whose work has shone a light on a rich cultural heritage that has often gone unexplored. This program asks the audience to consider how African American poetry provides tools for healing our nation’s deep racial wounds. \n\nTo begin this exploration of the vast diversity within African American poetic tradition\, UNH professors Reginald Wilburn and Dennis Britton will facilitate three online conversations. Each discussion deconstructs four poems grouped by themes. Conversations will center these poems within the context of the African American literary tradition\, their cultural heritage\, the traditions they encompassed\, and the relevance this tradition has to us today.
