DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn Poets presents Nonsense and Senselessness\, a Craft Lab with Jericho Brown\, on August 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. EDT online via Zoom. \nFrom the organizers: \nFormer Poet Laureate Rita Dove says that “poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.” Yet many readers still struggle to understand the meanings of poems. In this craft lab\, we’ll dive into what’s going on when we read a poem and think\, “That doesn’t make sense.” Looking at examples of sense and nonsense in the work of several poets\, we’ll explore the different techniques poets use to balance meaning and mystery\, and we’ll generate new work together through a set of unconventional exercises\, drawing on the themes of sense and nonsense\, engendering new ideas about writing. (Please check spam / promotions folder for this email and email admin@writerscenter.org with any questions.) \nDonations toward the readers’ honoraria are greatly appreciated. \nPaisley Rekdal is the author of a book of essays\, The Night My Mother Met Bruce Lee;  the hybrid photo-text memoir\, Intimate; and five books of poetry: A Crash of Rhinos; Six Girls Without Pants; The Invention of the Kaleidoscope; Animal Eye\, a finalist for the 2013 Kingsley Tufts Prize and winner of the UNT Rilke Prize; and Imaginary Vessels\, finalist for the 2018 Kingsley Tufts Prize and the Washington State Book Award. Her newest work of nonfiction is Appropriate: A Provocation\, which examines cultural appropriation (W.W. Norton\, 2021). Her book-length essay\, The Broken Country: On Trauma\, a Crime\, and the Continuing Legacy of Vietnam. was published by University of Georgia Press in 2017. A new collection of poems\, Nightingale\, which re-writes many of the myths in Ovid’s The Metamorphoses\, was published spring 2019.  She was the guest editor for Best American Poetry 2020. \nHer work has received a Guggenheim Fellowship\, the Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Fellowship\, a Fulbright Fellowship\, a Civitella Ranieri Residency\, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship\, Pushcart Prizes (2009\, 2013)\, Narrative’s Poetry Prize\, the AWP Creative Nonfiction Prize\, and various state arts council awards. Her poems and essays have appeared in The New York Times Magazine\, American Poetry Review\, The Kenyon Review\, Poetry\, The New Republic\, Tin House\, the Best American Poetry series (2012\, 2013\, 2017\, 2018\, 2019)\, and on National Public Radio\, among others. She is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Utah\, where she is also the creator and editor of the community web projects Mapping Literary Utah and Mapping Salt Lake City. In May 2017\, she was named Utah’s Poet Laureate and received a 2019 Academy of American Poets’ Poets Laureate Fellowship. \nCarol Edgarian is an award-winning novelist\, essayist\, teacher\, and editor. Her novels include the newly-released Vera\, the New York Times bestseller Three Stages of Amazement\, and the international bestseller Rise the Euphrates\, hailed by The Washington Post as a book “whose generosity of spirit\, intelligence\, humanity and ambition are what literature ought to be and rarely is today.” Rise the Euphrates was awarded the ANC Freedom Prize\, and a twentieth-anniversary revised edition of the novel was released to mark the centennial of the Armenian Genocide.  \nCarol’s articles and essays have appeared in the Wall Street Journal\, NPR\, and W\, among many other places\, and she coedited The Writer’s life: Intimate Thoughts on Work\, Love\, Inspiration\, and Fame from the Diaries of the World’s Great Writers. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and schools on topics such as “Why Stories Matter\,” “The Art of Fiction” and publishing today. \nIn 2003 Carol and her husband\, Tom Jenks\, founded the nonprofit Narrative\, a leading digital publisher of fiction\, poetry\, essays\, and art. Dedicated to encouraging reading without paywalls\, and to supporting writers by paying them fairly for their work\, Narrative publishes hundreds of artists each year and is widely read across generations\, in schools\, and around the globe. DESCRIPTION:The International Literature Festival Berlin presents Poetry Night with Ana Luísa Amaral\, Athena Farrokhzad\, Olga Ravn\, Arthur Sze\, and Charlotte Van den Broeck on October 9 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Central European Summer Time (10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pacific). \nFrom the organizers: \nSince her debut in 1990\, Ana Luísa Amaral has published numerous volumes of poetry. Most recently\, the volume »Was ist ein Name« [Eng. »What’s In a Name«\, 2017; translated into German by Michael Kegler and Piero Salabè] was published to great acclaim in German. In 2021\, she won the Premio Reina Sofía de Poesía\, the most important prize for poetry in the Ibero-­Romance language category. To kick off this year’s Poetry Night\, Amaral will talk about the transformation process that her poetry undergoes when translated into other languages. \nAthena Farrokhzad’s haunting long poem »White Blight« [translated by Jennifer Hayashida] is dedicated to the theme of the emigration experience. She alternately lends her voice to the individual members of her family\, whose statements illustrate different perspectives on the new place of life and the memory of her native Iran. The daughter of the family\, however\, remains silent\, linking the various voices into a polyphonic work of disorientation and speechlessness. \nOlga Ravn is one of Denmark’s most popular authors. Her poetry debut in 2009 was followed by three further volumes of poetry. The minimalist\, unrelenting texts in the volume »den hvide rose« [tr: Becoming a Rose; translated into German by Alexander Sitzmann] repeat the classic image of the rose in a meditative rhythm and address love\, illness\, loss\, and heartbreaking loneliness. The book was nominated for the Danish Readers’ Book Prize. \nCharlotte Van den Broeck\, who opened the 2016 Frankfurt Book Fair with Arnon Grunberg\, was awarded the Herman de Coninck Debut Prize for her poems\, which have been translated into several languages. Her volume »Chameleon\, Nachtroe« [translated into German by Stefan Wieczorek] has the theme of failed love running through it as the common thread of many »texts that express the endless feeling of travel\, of nocturnal highways and hotel rooms\, a world of breathlessness.« [Leipziger Zeitung]\nWinner of the American Book Award\, the Lannan Literary Award for Poetry\, and the National Book Award for Poetry\, Arthur Sze is the author of eleven volumes of poetry and also a celebrated translator of Chinese. His texts show a condensed lyrical expression of that which often lies far apart in time and space. He reveals the ephemeral in nature and traces phenomena whose meaning and beauty sometimes go unnoticed. My narrative is that I’m black\, southern\, raised by a single mother. Knowing my narrative helps me understand why tobacco fields and dirt roads show up in my poems. By identifying and exploring my symbols\, I can begin to telescope inside them\, making the language I use to speak about them fresh\, and discover why these symbols were given to me. I believe our images come from God and are our egoless souls trying to make us see our connection to the world.
