SUMMARY:The Autry presents Saad Nizhóní (Beautiful Words) with Sherwin Bitsui and Tacey M. Atstitty
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers:  \n“Join the Autry and Navajo multimedia documentarian Pamela J. Peters as she introduces two evenings featuring remarkable Navajo poets whose beautiful words integrate Diné history\, language and culture. This Zoom event will showcase the talents of Sherwin Bitsui and Tacey M. Atstitty on July 16\, and will conclude with readings from Jake Skeet and Rowie Shebala on July 23. \nNavajos have all been deeply impacted\, either directly or indirectly through our kinship ties\, by COVID-19. Most news reporting reveals the tragic impact of COVID-19 on the Navajo reservation\, yet we rarely hear from the people directly impacted. These readings offers an opportunity to hear from Navajo people who have been affected by the virus. Their distinctive poetry illustrates the perseverance of the People\, the strong connections individuals have to their homeland\, and the language and traditional life of the Diné. \nThis Zoom event will not only showcase four Navajo poets\, but will also provide an opportunity to donate to the Utah Navajo COVID-19 Relief Program. This program was created under the Utah Navajo Health system to provide food and supplies to elders. Program coordinator Sahar Khadjenoury will describe the organization’s efforts\, provide information on making donations\, and explain how each donation helps the surrounding tribal communities.” \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kdO6tpjMrE9cDt-6Up5www-5m3LHYVSN2

SUMMARY:Literary Cleveland presents Poetry and Protest with Jericho Brown\, Philip Metres\, and Barbara Jane Reyes
DESCRIPTION:From the organizers: \n“As part of the Inkubator Conference\, Literary Cleveland presents Poetry and Protest\, a panel discussion with Jericho Brown\, Philip Metres\, and Barbara Jane Reyes. \nWe’re living through a sudden resurgence of the power of protest—from Black Lives Matter marches to the pandemic statehouse protests. The word ‘protest’ comes from the Latin\, meaning to testify to something publicly. Usually\, protests occur as a way of raising a voice against injustice\, or to support those unjustly treated. How do poets and writers approach the question of testifying publicly\, standing with the unjustly treated? Poets Jericho Brown\, Philip Metres\, and Barbara Jane Reyes will read poems (their own and others’) and talk about the role of poetry in social movements for change\, and poetry as protest.” \nRegister here: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/Inkubator-Poetry-and-Protest/register

SUMMARY:A Wild and Precious Life Series: A Reading with Victoria Chang\, Roberto Carlos Garcia\, Marilyn Nelson\, and Ruben Quesada
DESCRIPTION:Join Victoria Chang\, Roberto Carlos Garcia\, Marilyn Nelson\, and Ruben Quesada for a reading on July 22. From the organizer of Wild and Precious Life Series\, Dustin Brookshire:  \nSipping a beverage at your local coffee shop. Eating a slice a pizza at your favorite pizzeria. Happy hour with friends. Going to the gym. Reading poetry in the park. Sitting in the audience of a poetry reading. High-fives. Handshakes. Hugs. COVID-19 has drastically changed how we live our lives\, forcing us to forego what was second nature. In these uncertain times\, the words of Mary Oliver demand that we answer the question: \nTell me\, what is it you plan to do\nwith your one wild and precious life?\n– “The Summer Day” \nPoetry comforts\, inspires\, heals\, is a catalyst for change\, and so much more. Now\, maybe more than ever\, poets need a space to share their art\, and poetry lovers need a space to receive the poet’s art. A Wild & Precious Life Series is a virtual poetry reading series created to be that space. \nReadings will take place via Zoom with “doors” opening at 7pm EST and readings starting at 7:30pm EST. \nJoin here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89325735262

SUMMARY:[Rescheduled] Bookshop.org presents Ellen Bass and Toi Derricotte
DESCRIPTION:From the organizer: \nPlease join us for a poetry reading with Toi Derricotte and Ellen Bass. Toi and Ellen are dear friends and have shared their poetry for many years. They are now coming together for this special reading of work from their new books. Of Toi Derricotte’s most recent book\, “I”:New and Selected Poems\, Terrance Hayes writes: “What song do you sing when you sing ‘so low we can’t hear you?’ Toi Derricotte makes poetry of that song. It rises from ‘the houses where you hear the least squealing\,’ it is ‘quieter than blossoms & near invisible.’ It is filled with witness and love for our literal and literary families. The tough and tender intimacies of human bonds bind these marvelous new and selected poems.” Of Ellen Bass’ new book\, Indigo\, Mark Doty writes: “’You may have to break/ your heart\,’ writes Ellen Bass\, ‘but it isn’t nothing/ to know even one moment alive.’ That complex tenant of faith underlies every poem in this superb book\, an inquiry into what it is to be present in the physical world\, in time\, a body in the world of bodies. Bass’s poems are surprising\, tender\, hungry and wide awake\, fearless in their attention to every nuance of feeling. I love this book wholeheartedly.”  \nRegister here: https://mailchi.mp/ellenbass/toiderricotte

As rhetoric flies\, politics grind\, and heat increases along all our borders\, the experiences of these writers—who have risked their lives to cross land and oceans into the United States—must be heard. \nJoin us to celebrate the courageous new voices in this year’s anthology release with readings from our students and stories from our teaching artists Álvaro Enrigue\, Cherry Lou Sy\, and Hannah Kingsley-Ma\, and special guests Karla Cornejo Villavicencio (The Undocumented Americans\, 2020)\, Sonia Guiñansaca (Nostalgia & Borders\, 2016)\, Martyna Majok (Sanctuary City\, 2020)\, Javier Zamora (Unaccompanied\, 2017)\, and Jenny Zhang (My Baby First Birthday\, 2020). \nWe would love your help to make DREAMing Out Loud possible in 2021. To date\, the program has primarily been funded by a time-limited grant that ends this year. Public support is crucial for the program to continue offering workshops in 2021. \nThe suggested donation for entry is $5 for the general public\, and additional generosity is deeply appreciated. Students and their families receive free admission. Any donations are considered 100 percent tax-deductible and support DREAMing Out Loud’s mission to defend young undocumented writers and immigrants’ free expression at a time of unprecedented need. Here are some of features of the program that your donation could help us fund: \n\n$10 – a free anthology for a student writer\n$50 – a paid volunteer copyeditor\n$100 – lunch or dinner for students in one of our workshop sessions\n$150 – a guest speaker’s honorarium\n$200 – an hour of workshop facilitation\n$400 – a student stipend to offset costs of living while participating in the program\n$2\,000 – a teaching assistant’s stipend\n$3\,200 – a teaching artist’s stipend\n\nFollowing your registration\, you will be sent a link to the virtual reading via email within 24 hours of the event. If you are a student\, family member\, friend\, or institutional partner of DREAMing Out Loud\, please ignore the button below and sign up for your free ticket here. \nPlease contact Nicole Gervasio at ngervasio@pen.org for any additional questions or concerns. \nRegister here: https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/store/31525/alldonations/34031

We were open for six months before the COVID-19 outbreak closed our doors and now we are facing the real possibility of that closure becoming permanent. It is our conviction that queer & trans bars and spaces are sexy\, important\, beautiful\, and necessary\, and in this rapidly evolving world we want to see spaces like ours continue to exist. Majestic was created by and for queer community and we are leaning of the resiliency of this community as we move forward. This benefit will help cover operating costs of the bar as we look for both immediate and long term paths into the future. We thank you for your support. \n𝙉𝙊𝙏𝙀𝙎 \nWhile this is a benefit for The Majestic\, it is also a gathering of community around queer art and a belief in queer futures. As such\, it is not our wish to turn anyone away if cost is prohibitive. If this is the case\, send an email to majesticnoho@gmail.com with the subject line “Reading Access” and we will send you the information needed to access the event with no questions asked. \nTo minimize any interruptions during the reading\, we will have several moderators moving through the pages of the call and prepared to remove anybody who attempts to disrupt the event. \nRegister here: https://www.majesticsaloon.com/reading/tickets
