SUMMARY:International Literature Festival Berlin presents Poetry Night with Ana Luísa Amaral\, Athena Farrokhzad\, Olga Ravn\, Arthur Sze\, and Charlotte Van den Broeck
DESCRIPTION:The International Literature Festival Berlin presents Poetry Night with Ana Luísa Amaral\, Athena Farrokhzad\, Olga Ravn\, Arthur Sze\, and Charlotte Van den Broeck on October 9 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Central European Summer Time (10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pacific). \nFrom the organizers: \nSince her debut in 1990\, Ana Luísa Amaral has published numerous volumes of poetry. Most recently\, the volume »Was ist ein Name« [Eng. »What’s In a Name«\, 2017; translated into German by Michael Kegler and Piero Salabè] was published to great acclaim in German. In 2021\, she won the Premio Reina Sofía de Poesía\, the most important prize for poetry in the Ibero-Romance language category. To kick off this year’s Poetry Night\, Amaral will talk about the transformation process that her poetry undergoes when translated into other languages. \nAthena Farrokhzad’s haunting long poem »White Blight« [translated by Jennifer Hayashida] is dedicated to the theme of the emigration experience. She alternately lends her voice to the individual members of her family\, whose statements illustrate different perspectives on the new place of life and the memory of her native Iran. The daughter of the family\, however\, remains silent\, linking the various voices into a polyphonic work of disorientation and speechlessness. \nOlga Ravn is one of Denmark’s most popular authors. Her poetry debut in 2009 was followed by three further volumes of poetry. The minimalist\, unrelenting texts in the volume »den hvide rose« [tr: Becoming a Rose; translated into German by Alexander Sitzmann] repeat the classic image of the rose in a meditative rhythm and address love\, illness\, loss\, and heartbreaking loneliness. The book was nominated for the Danish Readers’ Book Prize. \nCharlotte Van den Broeck\, who opened the 2016 Frankfurt Book Fair with Arnon Grunberg\, was awarded the Herman de Coninck Debut Prize for her poems\, which have been translated into several languages. Her volume »Chameleon\, Nachtroe« [translated into German by Stefan Wieczorek] has the theme of failed love running through it as the common thread of many »texts that express the endless feeling of travel\, of nocturnal highways and hotel rooms\, a world of breathlessness.« [Leipziger Zeitung]\nWinner of the American Book Award\, the Lannan Literary Award for Poetry\, and the National Book Award for Poetry\, Arthur Sze is the author of eleven volumes of poetry and also a celebrated translator of Chinese. His texts show a condensed lyrical expression of that which often lies far apart in time and space. He reveals the ephemeral in nature and traces phenomena whose meaning and beauty sometimes go unnoticed. Arthur Sze will be joining via live stream. \nEvent language(s): English/ diverse \nRegister here:

SUMMARY:Fall for the Book Festival presents Maggie Smith & Victoria Chang in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Fall for the Book Festival presents Maggie Smith & Victoria Chang in conversation on October 26 at 7 p.m. EDT via Crowdcast. \nFrom the organizers: \nAward-winning poets Maggie Smith and Victoria Chang discuss the objects of everyday life and family history — a hallway mirror\, a marriage license\, a photograph — and how we come to terms and know ourselves through them. Smith’s new collection\, Goldenrod uses what Slate calls Smith’s “superpower”: brilliant metaphors that celebrate human emotions to explore everyday life with empathy and honesty. Time says\, “To read Maggie Smith is to embrace the achingly precious beauty of the present moment.” Chang’s Dear Memory: Letters on Writing\, Silence\, and Grief spans generations as Chang shapes her own identity through the trauma and loss of her family\, and of being American and Chinese. Politics & Prose says\, “While the papers left behind by Chang’s mother are a record of past events\, Chang’s letters demonstrate how their effects continue to resonate―across time\, oceans\, and through generations… Imaginatively creating a conversation between past and present.” \nRegister here: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/fftb_smithchang

SUMMARY:Ellen Bass presents Living Room Craft Talks: The Fourth Series
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Bass presents Living Room Craft Talks: The Fourth Series\, a series of craft talks\, on Fridays beginning October 29 and continuing through December 10\, 2021 from 9 to 11 a.m. Pacific. \nFrom the organizer: \nRunning Live Fridays\, Oct. 29\, Nov. 5\, 12\, 19\, Dec. 3 & 10\n9 – 11 am PT | 12 – 2 pm ET\nand Recorded for Viewing Online Through January 31\, 2022 \nYou do not need to have taken the previous Living Room Craft Talks to take this series. \nIf you want to learn more about the strategies that you can employ to write poems that are vivid\, arresting\, meaningful and complex\, I’d be delighted to have you join me in the Living Room Craft Talks: The Fourth Series. If you haven’t attended the previous talks\, that’s fine. Each series is independent. \nI’ll be presenting practical teachings that you’ll be able to put to use at whatever stage of development you’re at—whether you’re just beginning\, somewhere in the great middle\, or are an accomplished and published poet. These talks are focused on poetry\, but prose writers are welcome. This precise attention to structure and language will enrich your work as well. \nThe topics for this series are: Sentiment & Sentimentality\, Image\, Line\, Form\, Eco-Poetry\, and The Ode. \nWe’ll be reading exemplary poems from a large and diverse group of poets. And there will be guest appearances from: Mark Doty\, Paul Tran\, Jason Schneiderman\, Victoria Chang\, Marie Howe\, and Ross Gay! \n— \nThe Living Room Craft Talks: The Fourth Series is made possible by the use of two systems: Zoom and a participant-only portal on this website. The live craft talks are held on Zoom. The recordings of the craft talks and the handouts of poems and resources are made available through the portal on this website. \nCost: $300 (US dollars) for the series\, including access to the talks’ recordings through January 31\, 2022 \nFull and partial scholarships available for Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color (BIPOC) writers and individuals with financial need.\n \nWe want this workshop to be accessible to as many people as we can manage. We know these are difficult times. If the price is a hardship\, please email Jen at jen@ellenbass.com and tell us in 2-3 sentences what your circumstances are and what\, if anything\, you could pay. Once you apply\, please wait for a reply before signing up. \nAlternatively\, if you’d like to sponsor a person in need\, please contact Jen. \nDates: Fridays\, October 29\, November 5\, 12\, 19\, December 3\, and 10 \nPlease note: we will be taking a break on November 26th. \nAccess to the participant-only portal for the series on this website is through January 31\, 2022. So\, if you miss any of the live sessions on Zoom\, you have time to watch them on this website.\n \nTimes:  9 – 11 am Pacific |12 – 2 pm Eastern \nEach talk will be approximately 2 hours long (some sessions may run long). The talk will include a wealth of information about the topic\, close readings\, and discussion of poems that illustrate these aspects of the craft\, as well as practical guidance and exercises to bring these elements into your own poems. The talk will be followed by a half hour for questions. Ellen may not be able to answer all your questions in that time\, but she’ll read them all and\, when possible\, she’ll try to work in responses in the following talks. \nRegister here: https://www.ellenbass.com/events/living-room-craft-talks-the-fourth-series/ \n
