Oscar V de L. Milosz

Oscar Venceslas Lubicz-Milosz was born in 1877 in Czereia, Lithuania. At the age of twelve his parents brought him to Paris and sent him to school. As a student he possessed a special ability in languages and eventually came to speak or read most of the modern European tongues as well as Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.

His first poems were pubished in 1899, and after the First World War he became a minister-resident for Lithuania. During his life he wrote several political and historical treatises on problems affecting Lithuania and the Baltic and Slavic countries, and gathered three collections of Lithuanian folk lore. In 1930 he became a French citizen. He died in March, 1939.
