Mark Schafer

Mark Schafer is a translator, a visual artist, and a lecturer in Spanish at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. He has translated poetry, novels, short stories, and essays by many Latin American authors, including David Huerta, Alberto Ruy Sánchez, Gloria Gervitz, Virgilio Piñera, Jesús Gardea, and Antonio José Ponte. Schafer has received grants and awards for his translations, including the Robert Fitzgerald Prize, two translation fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a grant from the Fund for Culture Mexico-USA. His latest translation is The Scale of Maps (CIty Lights 2011), a novel by the Spanish author Belén Gopegui.
