Esther Allen

Esther Allen is the author of an International PEN report on Translation and Globalization. In addition to her Copper Canyon Press publication of Nostalgia for Death and Hieroglyphs of Desire, Allen's translations include Blaise Cendrar's Modernities and Other Writings, ,The Selected Writings of José Martí; The Tale of the Rose, by Consuelo de Saint Exupèry; Dark Back of Time, by Javier Marías; Dancing with Cuba: A Memoir of the Revolution, by Alma Guillermoprieto; and The Nubian Prince, by Juan Bonilla.

Allen is the Executive Director of the Center for Literary Translation at Columbia University and an assistant professor of literature at Baruch College. She has recently been awarded a 2009-2010 Fellowship at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library.
