Sung-Il Lee

Born in Seoul in 1943, Sung-Il Lee grew up in Korea and did his undergraduate studies in English at Yonset University, Seoul. After fulfilling his military service, he went to the United States for graduate studies in English. Having completed his graduate work (MA, University of California at Davis, 1973; PhD, Texas Tech University, 1980), he returned to Korea to teach at his alma mater. Twice a Korean Times translation prize-winner, Sung-Il Lee has taught Korean literature at the University of Toronto and at the University of Washington. His first book of translations, The Wind and the Waves (Asian Humanities Press, Berkeley) won the 1990 Grand Prize in the Republic of Korea Literary Awards. He currently serves as the Director of the Institute of Translation at Yonsei University.
