After Matchbox Funerals...
Kathleene West

Not many old animals on a farm. Sometimes

the watchdog's smart enough

not to chase machinery

or a prize cow tops the milk bucket

one more season. An occasional wily cat.

These earned their names

and I call them out:

Colonel Doberman

Old Roan

Gray Whiskers

Each spring a farm bleats and squeals--impatient

with new animals.

I name as many as I can mark.

This year the orphaned pig is Joseph.
